What is crown?

A crown is a shell that fits over a tooth.
The tooth must first be prepared, requiring around 1mm to be shaved off all around the circumference and from the biting surface of the tooth, leaving the core intact. The crown is custom made by a dental technician and is cemented in place over the core.

What is it for?

Crowns are primarily designed to improve the structural integrity of teeth that have been significantly weakened by large cavities, fractures, cracks, heavy wear or large fillings, a tooth which has required a root canal filling, the tooth which usually be too weak to support a filling or inlay.
Having the crown fit over and around the core of the tooth helps to hold the tooth intact.
In some cases, crowns are used for their aesthetic benefits where the tooth is relatively healthy but unsightly. However, crowns for aesthetic benefit are rarely the best option and must only be selected with caution.

What are porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are custom-made facings which are fixed onto the front surface of teeth visible in the smile (usually upper front teeth).

Are they suitable for me?

If you want to change your smile, and want to achieve the best possible appearance, porcelain veneers may be for you. They can improve the appearance of teeth which may be discoloured, misshapen, eroded, crowded or chipped.

What does the treatment involve?

Often before starting, we will take impressions of your teeth to make a trial model of the final result.
The area is usually numbed before treatment. We shave the teeth back by around 0.5mm to make room for the porcelain veneers. After this we take impressions of the prepared teeth before fitting your temporary veneers.
Two weeks later, we will replace your temporary veneers with the finished porcelain veneers. We will try them in to check the fit and appearance before fixing in place with a strong adhesive.

What are the alternative treatments?

• No treatment
• Crown
• Composite veneer
• Orthodontics (Invisalign – for crowded teeth)
• Tooth whitening (to lighten colour only)
